The Wings of Heroes
The Tuskegee Airmen of World War II
By Nancy Niles Sexton

Until the Second World War, African-Americans were denied the right to pilot aircraft for the United States Air Corps. When finally given the opportunity, the Tuskegee Airmen were assembled to begin training in Alabama. By the war's end, it was evident that they had played a vital part in victories in Europe and in North Africa. With impressive medals for bravery in battle, including the Purple Heart and many Distinguished Flying Crosses, they opened the way for the integration of the American armed forces.

The play is set in June 1944, shortly after D-Day. The war in Europe is almost over. It is time to remember. It is time to go home and face the new challenges that lie ahead.
