General Policies

  1. No tardiness or unexcused absences. Please do your best to be no more than 5 minutes late to class. If you are going to miss a class, you need to email mail@waldentheatre.org at least one hour prior to class time. We reserve the right to recast roles in showcases and shows if you are repeatedly late to class or miss more than four classes in one semester.
  2. Cell phones, laptops/ tablets, and gaming systems need to be turned off during class time. If you need to contact your student during class time, please call 502-589-0084.
  3. All students need to remain inside the Walden building from the time they arrive until the time they are picked up to ensure their safety. Students 17 years of age and younger need a guardian’s permission to walk to nearby restaurants during dinner break.
  4. No drugs or alcohol of any kind are permitted. Failure to abide by this rule will result in immediate dismissal.
  5. All students must come to class prepared. This means having a notebook that has paper and a slot to receive handouts. Students must also have a pen or a pencil. It also means wearing the appropriate clothing. Examples of appropriate clothing include: sweat pants, yoga pants, and loose fitting clothes in general. Tight-fitting jeans, skirts, school uniforms, and flip-flop shoes are not appropriate.
  6. Students need to be picked up no later than 15 minutes after the end of class or rehearsal time. If you are going to be late picking up your student, you will need to call the office.

Evaluations

Every Walden Theatre student is evaluated on their progress at the end of each semester by their instructors. Class standards are posted in the lobby and classrooms, and are discussed with the students on the first day of class. Progress reports will be mailed home with registration information for students at the Apprentice level and below. Playmaking, Performance, and Stagecraft students will be given their progress reports during their end-of-semester interview. In addition to progress reports, students at the Apprentice level and above will complete self-evaluations at the beginning and end of every semester.

Off – Book Date Policy

  • Students at the Studio level and above will be asked to memorize material for class work, showcases and productions. A date will be announced when students can no longer hold their scripts in class and rehearsals. Students and their guardians will be asked to sign an “off-book date agreement” to ensure that material is memorized in a timely manner and learning can progress for the benefit of all students. If your student needs help with memorizing, please contact Charlie and he will find someone to assist you.

Complimentary Tickets to Performances

Every Walden student receives one free ticket to every show in our season. We strongly encourage our students and their families to see as many shows as possible. Walden’s season of plays compliments the work in the classroom and showcases the amazing talents of our community.

FAQ: Tuesday/Thursday Classes

Walden Theatre began with a small number of highly dedicated students who auditioned to participate in both acting classes and productions. As the number of interested students grew, Walden opened its classes to all young people ages 8 – 18 while keeping the productions audition only. Due to the great successes of Walden alumni, the high quality of classes and productions, and the growing reach of Walden programming in schools, Walden has reached student capacity at its Payne street location.

In order to keep classes open for new students (including students who are not solely interested in performing) while maintaining our reputation for high quality theatre education, we have decided to make the following modifications to our conservatory program:

  • Three different tracks to accommodate the interests of our growing number of students. All students are required to take at least one year of Playmaking where they participate in a variety of classes and develop an appreciation for theatre. After these foundational classes, students can choose to concentrate on the advanced Playmaking track (playwriting, devising new works, directing, etc.), the Stagecraft track (technical skills and design), or the Performance track (voice, movement, and acting).
  • Longer rotations. We have extended the rotations from 6 classes to 8 to give our students more time to fully explore and understand the techniques and concepts taught in the rotation.
  • End of semester (bi-yearly) student evaluations. At the end of each semester students will be asked to self-evaluate their progress and participate in a feedback session with Instructors. These evaluations provide Instructors with necessary information to address the individual needs of each student in the classroom.

What if I don’t know what classes I want to take?

  • That’s OK! After your 1st year of Playmaking you will meet with Walden Theatre Instructors to discuss your progress in class and your interests. Class placements are not permanent, so if you have been focusing on performing and decide you would like to learn more about playwriting, you can switch classes at the end of the semester (and you can always switch back to acting if you choose!).

If I am not taking classes in the Performance track, can I still audition for the shows?

  • Yes! All Walden students at the Studio level and above are eligible to audition for Walden’s productions. All graduating seniors will be cast in the Young American Shakespeare Festival if they choose to audition for a role.

What if I only want to take one or two of the classes in a semester?

  • Walden does not pro-rate tuition for the semester nor do we offer classes ala carte. Our conservatory program promotes a well-rounded education that fosters an appreciation for all aspects of the theatre. Students must spend a minimum of two semesters at the Playmaking 1 level participating in foundational classes that will prepare them for success at more advanced levels of our conservatory. After two semesters of Playmaking, students may choose to focus on performance, technical theatre, or advanced playmaking classes. We encourage students to attend classes as regularly as possible, and we reserve the right to recast showcases and productions if a student is frequently absent from class.

Why is there so much Shakespeare in the spring?

  • Nancy Niles Sexton’s first Walden play was Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the spring of 1976. Nancy’s vision for Walden Theatre was grounded in the works of Shakespeare as the foundation for outstanding theatre training. Aside from being immensely entertaining, studying Shakespeare increases vocabulary, expands knowledge of literary and world history, and strengthens appreciation of the human experience. It is our belief that if a young person can conquer Shakespeare, they will have the confidence to attempt anything.

Will Walden still be fun?

  • Yes! You will still get to participate in class and plays with your friends, and there will be events, workshops, and opportunities for the entire Walden community to be together – but, the play is the thing. Walden is a training program for young theatre professionals and it is our responsibility to make sure our students are getting the most out of classes and rehearsals. The best kind of fun comes from recognizing and cultivating our artistic potential.
