Using themes students are currently studying in social studies, this program introduces the skills necessary to develop and perform short improvisational plays. Students will learn theater terminology, improvisation skills, and character development. This unique program gives students an introduction to KERA's Elements of Drama. Students will become familiar with theatre terminology, performance and creative dramatics. This workshop will focus on such drama skills as voice, movement, character, staging, monologues, scenes, production design and other aspects of the art form. William Shakespeare comes alive in this exciting interactive program. Students experience Shakespeare from the actor's point of view. Starting with an introduction to Shakespeare's language, students experience how an actor uses clues Shakespeare left behind in his words to bring the play off the page. This workshop explores how theatre had an impact on Greek society and how that society was represented on stage through the "Chorus". This workshop allows students to learn the structure, and explore the creative process of writing for the stage. Students study Aristotle's Poetics to learn the three unities: time, place, action; and the importance of creating a conflict within a play. This is a ten-week or twenty-week residency that goes into depth KERA's Literacy, Performance, and Technical elements. Students work together to create a short play, come up with a set design, a costume design for each character, and then act it out on the final day. Throughout the course students gain an understanding of theatre terminology, theatre occupations, and the aspects of putting on a production.
